State Seminar on “The Curse of Dowry: What Can We Do?”

To mark the occasion of International Women’s Day, Project Point Odisha successfully organized a State Seminar on “The Curse of Dowry: What Can We Do?” at Red Cross Bhawan, Bhubaneswar. The seminar aimed to raise awareness about the persistent social evil of dowry and explore actionable solutions through policy, education, and community engagement.

Objectives:

  • To critically examine the socio-cultural roots and legal aspects of dowry in India.

  • To sensitize youth and community leaders about the harmful consequences of dowry practices.

  • To identify actionable strategies to combat dowry at the grassroots level.

  • To promote gender equality and empower women through awareness and dialogue.

Key Highlights:

  • Inaugural Session: The seminar was inaugurated by prominent social activists, youth leaders, and academicians. A moment of silence was observed to honor victims of dowry-related violence.

  • Expert Talks: Eminent speakers including legal professionals, women rights activists, and psychologists shared insights on the legal frameworks (Dowry Prohibition Act, Domestic Violence Act), social stigmas, and preventive measures.

  • Youth Participation: Around 120 youth delegates from various colleges and youth clubs across Odisha participated in the seminar. They actively contributed to the panel discussions and interactive sessions.

  • Panel Discussion: A special panel titled “Voices Against Dowry: From Law to Action” explored community-based interventions and youth-led advocacy.

  • Cultural Expression: The event included street plays and poetry presentations by young artists highlighting the emotional and societal impact of dowry.

  • Resolutions Adopted: The participants resolved to initiate awareness campaigns at the village and institutional levels and proposed the formation of a “Youth Anti-Dowry Forum” under the banner of Project Point.

Outcome:

The seminar concluded with a strong commitment from all stakeholders to eliminate dowry practices through education, youth leadership, and policy advocacy. The event served as a platform to unite voices against dowry and catalyze a movement toward a more equitable society.
